THE MBD JOURNEY
“If all difficulties were known at the outset of a long journey, most of us would never start out at all.” -Dan Rather
THE BEGINNING
It was a cold, dreary day in the early spring of 2006 at Misericordia University in Northeast Pennsylvania. I was taking pre-game groundballs at shortstop during batting practice when a particular thought hit me for the very first time. It was the first moment in my baseball life I was faced with not only the thought, but the reality that playing baseball professionally after college was unlikely to happen, and my playing days were very much numbered. This moment happens to anyone who plays the game. For a fortunate and extremely talented few, this happens much later. For some, it’s earlier. However, it was in that moment that I made an internal decision that would dictate the direction of my professional life and put me on an amazing path of impact and fulfillment. I loved the game of baseball way too much to not be a part of it, so I made the decision that I would do everything in my power to find a way to work in the game, specifically in Baseball Operations for an MLB team. From that point forward, I gave it my all. I put everything I had into my schoolwork, pursued opportunities to lead and develop, and continued to learn about the game anyway I could. To work in baseball, or sports in general, is insanely competitive. I knew this, but I continued to compete. Through several internships and much sacrifice, hard work, determination, grit and resolve, my path began to show itself. In January of 2013, my goal was finally achieved, as I was hired to a full-time position in the Amateur Scouting Department with the Toronto Blue Jays. In my role, I traveled the country throughout the year to obtain scouting video and evaluate players in preparation for the amateur draft. After three years with the Blue Jays, I took a higher position with the Texas Rangers to be their Mid Atlantic Area Scout covering the territory of DC, DE, MD, PA, VA, and WV. I held that position for almost nine years and loved every second of it. In the fall of 2023, the ultimate personal and team goal in the game of baseball was achieved as our organization won the 2023 World Series!
WHY NOW
While I loved my scouting position and gave everything I had to it, I felt an internal pull over the past couple of years to be challenged differently, explore new opportunities, and look to use my skills and experience to help make a different kind of impact on the game. As a scout, you spend countless hours alone in the car traveling from one destination to the next. It’s during those drives that thoughts and ideas collect. For some, the drive continues and the thoughts remain. For me, NOW is the time to bring my baseball development thoughts and ideas to life and package them into an operation that will make a positive impact on players, coaches, teams, organizations, and baseball personnel.
WHY ME
Because I care. I care immensely about growing the game of baseball. I care about the development of players at all levels. The development of coaches, teams, and baseball personnel. Everyone has a desire to improve, and they should have the guidance and support to strive for their highest goals. I always come back to the word IMPACT. It’s a strong word that carries power. Whether it’s helping a player compete at the next level, coaching a high school team, holding a youth camp, providing a coaching development course, and so on, these all can make an impact on an individual or group. That impact then continues. By pulling together through development, we can positively affect the lives of many and in turn continue to grow and impact this great game in our own unique ways. I’m excited to play my part, to use my playing, scouting, and player development experience to grow individuals and the game. I am enthusiastic about my work, have a high level of detail, and always put the player first. Talent +Work Ethic + Aptitude +Love of the Game. If you have them, we can work together to get better.
Let’s build, let’s develop.
MOVING FORWARD
This was a big step to take. Lifting ideas off of a piece of paper and putting them into real action is exciting, but it also takes courage, perseverance, humility, and determination. It is a challenge that is extremely difficult but has the potential to be highly rewarding to me and others. I plan on providing updates on this baseball and business journey as MBD moves along. I hope you will follow along.
